Looks like the boys over at EFiX finally have some numbers to produce.
First number: release date. Projected release date for the EFiX Dongle V2 is set for July 7th with the V1 version to release in the next 2-3 weeks. After accessing the EFiX website, it looks like the only difference between V1 and V2 are “experimental support for motherboards” with the V2 chip.
Second number: pricing. the initial batch will be €80 (or about $125), although availability seems to be confined to Taiwan and Bulgaria at the moment, with a number of other countries (including the United States) listed as being “in negotiation.”
Today was the projected release date for EFiX’s USB Dongle. So far, nothing. I’ve had trouble accessing the EFiX Website as of late but according to Engadget, the site has a product page and non-working links to hardware compatibility pages. If anyone actually gets to the page, post some screenshots!
Probably a better alternative to the Psystar route, this USB dongle evidently sets up the computer to install OS X by just putting in the install DVD. For many, the OSX86 project isn’t something new, but for those who do not know about it, this method looks a lot easier. Most installation guides make you resize your partition (not too hard in Vista), create boot parameters, etc. If it really works like the video, this would be an excellent alternative. Although there still is the issue of drivers and supported hardware.
I wonder how long it’ll take the Apple police to get to this. Technically they’re not installing OS X on non-Apple hardware, just enabling it.
